- Keep it clean. Good sanitation is the first way to prevent cockroaches..
- Focus on the kitchen. Do not leave food overnight. Wash dirty dishes daily. Wipe up crumbs and spilled food, even in cupboards and pantries. Clean kitchen counters with a disinfectant spray every night. Don't forget the devices. Cockroaches love to feast on grease and spilled food on, in, under and behind your appliances, including your fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and under the kitchen sink.
- Limit where you eat. Limit food consumption to one room. This not only makes cleaning easier for you, it limits crumbs and spills that you might not notice in other rooms that provide another source of food for cockroaches.
- Store all food in sealed containers. Cockroaches can fit inside the openings of typical cardboard packaging in which food enters. This also applies to pet food. Pet food should be kept in an airtight container, preferably on the back porch so as not to attract cockroaches into the house. Pet bowls and containers should also be emptied every night.
- Empty the bin. Make sure your trash can has an airtight lid and empty it every night. Make sure your outdoor trash cans are clean and away from the house.
- Cockroaches feed at night. Vacuuming the kitchen floor every night eliminates the food supply to cockroaches. Also vacuum the other rooms in your home every 2 to 3 days. This helps to get rid of roach feces, body parts and bags of eggs. These contain pheromones that attract other roaches to your home.
- Get rid of entry points. Seal around utility hoses and crawl spaces. Make sure your windows and doors are secure and have weather stripping if necessary. Seal all cracks and crevices.Remove anything cockroaches can use for shelter, such as cardboard and paper.
