Food industry professionals know only too well the devastation that house flies can cause to their business processes. And, on top of that, compared to other pets such as rodents and cockroaches, house flies are responsible for the greatest number of personnel illnesses.
Unfortunately, the World Health Organization estimates that house flies transmit about 65 diseases, all of which can cause problems with inventory and the general health of staff. In light of this, this month we will be looking at some of the most common diseases transmitted by house flies.
House flies (Musca domestica) are part of the muscidae family and are actually native to the Middle East, before spreading around the world.Living about 2 to 4 weeks, house flies are so named because of their tendency to live close to humans, largely because human byproducts (mainly food waste) are their main sources of food.
What diseases do they carry?
- E.coli :
house flies are known to transmit E. coli, a particularly unpleasant disease that can cause diarrhea, blood in the stool, vomiting, stomach cramps and fever. Symptoms tend to appear about three to four days after infection, but they can start for up to two weeks.

- Anthrax :
Anthrax is a bacterial infection that manifests in four forms: skin, lungs, intestine and injection. The shape of the skin, the shape that houseflies will cause, is manifested by a small swollen blister that will eventually turn into a painless ulcer with a black center. If left untreated, this infection can be fatal.
- Food Poisoning:
caused by eating contaminated food, food poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, loss of appetite and fever. Although food poisoning tends to spread by itself, it can be an extremely painful and unpleasant experience. Flies carrying certain pathogens can cause this disease by simply landing on your food, so alertness is the key. - Tularemia:
a bacterial disease that can manifest in many forms, tularemia is usually ulceroglandular, that is, it appears as an ulcer near the affected area. This ulcer will also be accompanied by swollen and red lymph nodes, which usually appear in the armpits.
- Conjunctivitis :
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva - the thin, transparent tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid. It is a very common eye disease, which can spread easily in the workplace and in schools. Symptoms may include: itching, tearing, swelling and pink discoloration.
- Typhoid:
an acute disease associated with the Salmonella bacteria, typhoid presents as a particularly unpleasant fever. It is very contagious and can be caught by eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated. House flies are known to carry the relevant pathogens and can easily transmit the disease.
